In many automobile engines, the ignition cable connects the distributor or ignition coil to the spark plug. The high-voltage sparks required for combustion propagate through these cables. These cables have a copper core wire wrapped in a silicon or rubber insulator that is several times thicker than the core wire. The copper interior can also be surrounded by shielding to prevent radio frequency interference. There is a clamp on each end of the cable to connect the cable to the spark plug or coil so that the cable does not become loose due to engine vibration.
Generally speaking, a bad ignition cable will cause a fire. Dry rot and cracked aging or rubbing the engine until the internal wiring is exposed will cause sparks to bleed out of the wires. Sometimes, the arc of this kind of spark only occurs when it rains; moisture acts as a conductor. In any case, these misfires spell bad news for engine performance.
How serious is the ignition cable failure?
Critical. (Finish repair work as soon as possible.) A fire may not cause the car to break down and trap you, at least not immediately, but if left alone, it may cause additional damage to the engine or catalytic converter. If the car can still be driven, find a good mechanic. Almost everyone will make adjustments and arrange an appointment. Most ignition cables (and spark plugs) can be replaced on the same day, but it is best to put the car down.
1. Reduce power, acceleration, and fuel efficiency
One of the most common symptoms of ignition cable problems is engine performance problems. The ignition cable carries the spark from the coil and distributor to the spark plug so that the engine can burn. In severe cases, a bad cable may even cause the engine to stall.
2. Check if the engine light is on
Another symptom of a potential problem with the ignition cable is to check the lighting of the engine light. A faulty cable may cause the engine to misfire and excessive air-fuel ratio. If detected by the computer, the "check engine light" will be triggered in both cases. Checking the engine light can also cause some other performance problems, so it is strongly recommended to use a computer to scan the fault code.
3. The cable is obviously worn or damaged
Visible wear or damage is another symptom of ignition cable problems. The old cable may dry out, causing the insulation to crack. The cables may also rub against the hot manifold or engine components, which may cause them to melt and burn. Both of these issues impair the cable's ability to transmit sparks to sparks. This can cause fires and other performance problems, and in more serious cases, it can even cause cables to short-circuit the engine.
Although many new cars produced today do not have ignition cables, they still appear in a large number of cars and trucks and play a vital role in engine performance.
