Problem Analysis of ECU was Burned Continuously

Case:

One customer feedback that the ECU of 2009 FORD Kuga was burned continuously (as picture 1), the customer thought it was the ignition coil's problem, so returned back the 6 pcs ignition coils (as picture 2) to us.

Then we checked the coils, 5 coils were good but one coil was bad.

Case details:

The owner of Garage replied that it was a problem with the ignition coil at the time of the failure of the car, and then replaced 6 ignition coils with a good idle speed. After running for a short period of time for about 2 hours, the failure code was reported as missing cylinder. After inspection, it is found that the computer board is damaged. Check with the dealer of ignition coil that the coil is installed for Escape3.0L, and make sure the coil is OK.

After repairing the computer board and assembly it for the second time, the computer board burned out again. Then looked for a computer board repair master, he said that this car was easy to burn the computer board in the market, and it might be an ignition coil problem. He repaired the computer board and equipped with 6 original ignition coils together. There was no problem after assembly.

Case Analysis:

Is the computer board causing damage to the ignition coil, or is the ignition coil causing damage to the computer board?

The first failure :  Because the Ford Escape is 9 years old, the parts may be aging. When the ignition coil is aging, the short circuit current will increase, and the drive module of the computer board will become hot and damaged. This time, only the ignition coil was replaced, and the computer board was not checked. It is possible that the computer board has been damaged. After replacing with the ignition coil, the computer board causes the ignition coil to be damaged.

Therefore, there will be a second failure. The computer board was burnt out again, but this time only the computer board was repaired, while the ignition coil was not checked. This time, the short circuit of the damaged ignition coil caused the repaired computer board to be damaged.

The third repair is to fix the computer board and replace the qualified ignition coil at the same time, and then the problem is finally solved.

Solution:

If this kind of situation is similar to burning computer board, also check whether the ignition coil is damaged, which could be tested by " Multifunctional Test Bench" ( Pic5) and "Fire Gauge" (Pic 6) to check whether it is normal. Make sure the ignition coil and the computer board are qualified before assembly and test.
